Getting Kids Moving – Help for Overweight Teens
by: Kathryn Martyn

I recently read about a residential school program for overweight teens with a hefty price tag in excess of $5,000 per month. Whew, that should sweat off a few pounds just thinking about it. These programs rely on the same course as what is commonly recommended; a strict eating plan and increased activity schedule. Hopefully some counseling is offered, and college prep courses are the curriculum. But what of those kids? Are they getting a realistic head-start on a lifetime of healthier habits or are they simply doing what they are told, only to be fed to the wolves when they leave the safe environment of the school?

I tried to find stories of teens who had successfully completed these programs and gone on to healthy lives, and found none. What I did find were some other ideas, in case you feel you are at the end of your rope and don’t know where to turn.

Exercise Should be Fun

First, get your child interested in some type of exercise activity, whether indoor or outdoor. Most overweight kids probably aren’t too crazy about running and jumping up and down but what about bike riding? Another idea I’m wanting to try is hiking with a GPS (Global Positioning Satellite). If you like the outdoors, Geocaching sounds like enormous fun and anyone can do it. Adults are reporting losing 20, 30 or more pounds while they are out exploring the woods and hills in their surrounding area. Learning to use a GPS is educational (math, science, physics) at the same time.

I also recommend all parents get their kids into martial arts if they show any interest at all. Martial arts teaches kids discipline, respect for authority and builds self confidence and self esteem, and it has the added benefit of teaching self defense.

Talk to your kids. Find out what they may be interested in, and then explore the options together.

My son is a good example. He was never overweight but when he was 13 his skin tone was flabby. He didn’t go outside much, preferring to play Nintendo, and was an excellent student so he studied every day. Luckily neighborhood kids invited him to start playing football, and today, five years later he’s a senior in high school playing football and loving life. His body has shaped up nicely (he’s still a young teen but now has muscles and an excellent skin tone). He’s confident, well liked, and I have no worries that he’ll continue with a healthier lifestyle from this point forward.

Before he took up football we bought him a bike which was rarely used. He has a skate board, a mini-scooter, and a pogo stick. We tried karate classes (sadly, he broke his wrist playing at school so had to stop, and then didn’t want to return). Sometimes it takes awhile to find the right fit, but nearly everyone will feel better when they find a physical activity they like.

A search for “indoor sports Vancouver Washington ” (without the quotes) gave me lots of ideas. If you live in the city, get out the phone book and/or search the Internet for indoor activities in your town. Here are a few I found:

Parks & Recreation:

http://www.ci.vancouver.wa.us/parks-recreation/about/faq/eastvancouver.htm

Vancouver Indoor Sports

http://www.indoor-sports.com/facility.htm which offers programs for adults and children

Sports Walking:

http://www.combose.com/Sports/Walking/ (this isn’t a local site)

Books on Sports for Kids

The Ultimate Sport Lead-Up Game Book: The Very Best Skill-Building Games For Grades K-8 by Guy Bailey

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0966972716/

and The Ultimate Home school Physical Education Game Book: Fun & Easy-To-Use Games & Activities To Help You Teach Your Children Fitness, Movement & Sport Skills by Guy Bailey

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0966972740/

I also highly recommended DDR (Dance Dance Revolution), a video game that teaches kids dance steps as a challenge. Since you’re moving while you play, those that get good at the game will also achieve excellent physical shape at the same time. There are clubs all around the world and many web sites devoted to the play and practice.

Finding something your kids will enjoy that keeps them active is all it takes, and if they are reluctant, I can tell you once the blood starts pumping they’ll get jazzed. You may just find something you love as well. Don’t be afraid to try a few different things before you find the right fit, and wait to buy expensive equipment until you know it’s something you and your kids really love. You’ll be saving an equal amount in less food, soft drinks and medical bills down the road. Get up and get moving and your kids will naturally follow your lead.

Parents always want to provide their children with the best quality of education. Because of their many benefits, homeschooling and online school have been trending.

The online school was created to provide students the support of a traditional, residential, school while enrolled in a technology-based home-school academic program. This dynamic educational experience combines the resources of a traditional academy with the proven elementary and secondary multimedia curriculum structure provided by an online high school.

These online high schools offer online, distance learning to students all over the world. Student work is then transmitted over the Internet for the academy to grade and record. All a student needs is access to a computer with an internet connection!

Online schools provide a flexible, yet structured program, customized to meet the needs of each student. Online schools allow students the ability to attend classes, work on projects, and submit their work at any convenient time. Meaning the students may be logged into the classroom or working at the time that suits them and fits best into their schedule.

Along with the flexible hours, the certified teachers, counselors, and support staff of these online high schools are always available to help their clients succeed in providing a quality education for each student. They give the students a schedule that outlines what needs to be done along with deadlines for each assignment. This allows the online student to be prepared ahead of time and if need be, even complete assignments early. Also, Course material is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In an online high school environment, there is increased student interaction and the diversity of opinion, because everyone gets a say, not just the most talkative. Participating online is much less intimidating than “in the classroom.” Anonymity provides students a level playing field undisturbed by bias caused by seating arrangement, gender, race and age. Students can also think longer about what they want to say and add their comments when ready. In a traditional class room, the conversation could have gone way past the point where the student wants to comment.

The unique thing about an online high school is that online learning enables student-centered teaching approaches. Every student has their own way of learning that works best for them. Some learn visually others do better when they “learn by doing.”

These are just some of the benefits of online schools. Many have subscribed to it, many have not. Now, it’s up to you to decide.

Mitch Stenson researches alternatives attending classes in a school building with online school as the solution. You can participate in courses for online high school or any age from K-12.

The Truth About Online Schools

Although online education is rapidly gaining acceptance, many people still struggle with misconceptions about attending an online school. Distance learning has many advantages, especially for working people who want to get additional certifications or degrees or people who have difficulty in attending a traditional school. It is not easy to convince them of the advantages without first dealing with negative ideas that prevent them from taking distance learning seriously.

Online education is expensive. Truth: Many online schools offer reasonable tuition fee rates, and, in the case of online high schools, there are state-sponsored charter schools that offer distance learning for free. One should also consider that some expenses such as transportation, food and textbooks no longer apply, since schoolwork can be done at home and course materials are available online.

Expenses can be reduced further by getting credit for courses already taken in another school. With this, students do not need to pay for all courses in the curriculum, and can even help in getting a diploma in a shorter time.

Online schools do not give good quality education. Truth: Unless the school is a diploma mill, online schools with proper accreditation are obliged to have curriculums that are comparable, if not better, than those in traditional schools. A prospective student can ask for a trial class and get feedback from past and present students and faculty to get a feel of the distance learning environment.

Work done in online schools is easier and less challenging. Truth: The workload is the same as in traditional schools, but the added challenge for the student to be responsible for the schedule and pace of his learning. This is not as easy as most people think, since there are many things that could distract a student from his or her tasks.

Students are isolated and lacking in socialization. Truth: Socialization can happen outside the classroom. Distance learners connect with people in their neighborhood or community. Some course assignments require collaboration with other students like themselves.

Online schools are not respectable. Truth: Respectability is assured by proper accreditation. This is why would-be students are
1000
advised to stay away from institutions that are not accredited or still in the process of accreditation.

Credits or degrees earned in an online school cannot be transferred or will not be accepted by employers. Truth: Again, this is not an issue with properly accredited institutions, especially those associated with established colleges and universities offering online degree programs.

Have a great day!

I am a life coach for parents with young adults who have failed to launch and for young adults navigating the early years of independence. I am also a lawyer and single mom. I have two sons and my youngest, Richard, is just about ready to finish high school. We applied to about six colleges just before Thanksgiving, a rite that I had just done four years ago with his older brother, and now are waiting to hear back for the winning selections. It is worse than Oscar night. Many friends and family tease me about the empty nest. What will I do with the “kids” gone? I reply that is a fantasy that is one of the best kept secrets. No one wants to admit that in this day and age, we have many young adults not leaving home or coming back home after failed attempts out on their own or after college. The latest number is 18 million young adults living at home and not because they want to do so. The young adult leaving home after 18 was traditional for previous generations, but it is not reality for our generation.

What is going wrong is that no one is preparing our young adults for independence. We want to believe as parents that the schools and colleges are doing that, but they aren’t. We have both parents working these days and many single parents also working. As parents, we have been lulled into thinking that somehow the schools will launch our kids into adulthood. The sad fact is that our schools are doing a worse job than they ever have. As Dr. Mel Levine says in his book, Ready or Not, Here Life Comes, our high schools have become college prep institutions. This was not the case just 30-40 years ago. The high schools then had been to prepare the student with skills to enter the adult world. There is virtually no preparation in that direction today. The focus is to create better students for college and to obtain better test scores for funding. The student is a product, not a human. But without better parenting and parental involvement at this development stage, we are going to continue to see lost dependent young adults because the fact is, schools are not going to change any time soon.

Right now, according to a Time Magazine article in 2006, about 1/3 of our high school students are dropping out. I’ve seen statistics that about 1/3 of our high school students are going to college. That leaves about 1/3 who are simply graduating and trying to find their way. If high schools have become college prep institutions, they are failing 2/3 of our students. When I went to high school, there were three “tracks” to better serve students and their families. There was the college track in which students took honors classes to prepare them for college. In addition, there was the business track for those going into office related jobs, and there was the technical track which included car repair and the like. The focus very much was on where students would be going after high school and how best to prepare them to work in the real world. The key here is the word, “work”.

In my coaching, I try to get parents to begin a dialogue with their students in high school about what do they want to do when they grow up. No one is asking teens how they see their life after high school. If you ask any junior or senior, they will say they are going to college because that is what everyone is supposed to be doing. Those who have no intention of going will say they are going to college. We used to be able to say to friends, “I’m going to get a job at such and such and maybe go to college after a few years.” You can’t say that now. Somehow work before finishing college is disgusting. Is it any wonder we have young adults returning home?

Parents still need to be involved in raising their high school student. They need to be imparting and supporting a number of skills. Teens need to start living their lives, in part, as adults. They need to wake up on their own, manage time on their own, work in areas they think they might like as a career, drive a car, manage their own money, and pay some of their own bills. Of course, a little course in cooking wouldn’t be bad. Parents look at me as if I’m nuts. Work? At a job? There’s too much homework or they have too many extracurricular activities to be involved in so that their college applications look good. But every time I have a client put their teens to work and let them manage money and pay their own gas and other bills, a miracle happens. The teen starts to mature. Work ethics don’t come with a college degree. They start in the teens or as young adults. My sons both are getting into college and both have worked. Work should accompany college plans. It is a foundation of adult life. My sons have worked at several jobs and found out which ones they don’t like and why. This is how young adults figure out where they need to go. A college major is not a job. It is too late after four years, and frequently now, five years of college and thousands of dollars to find out that you aren’t going to be working in your major.

If your young adult just isn’t the college sort, that’s fine. In fact, that’s more normal than not. They have not failed and neither have you! This is a great journey for them and you. Help them to get the training and the sort of jobs they think they are interested in. I know of many grown adults and young adults who don’t finish college. The bottom line is finding out what career path you want and you can only do that if you try it out. College will be more relevant and meaningful if you know where you are going and what you want to do. Research out of Stanford and Brown University shows that the teen brain is continuing to grow until about age 25. These are learning and developing years in the most significant sense. Both of my sons may not go the traditional route of four years of college following high school and then getting a job. I didn’t either. My oldest son has gone to two colleges and about to go to a third. He is finding what he likes, where he likes to live and who he is and that is the real goal of growing up, not a degree.

Parents are relieved when I tell them there is no path, just the illusion of one. Their job for the next 4-8 years is one of supporting and helping their young adult to find their way to independence. It is a process to be involved in and enjoyed.

Dance careers can be difficult to jump-start, so why not listen to some advice from professional dancers?

This past weekend, we had some additions to our usual group of friends, professional dancers. After I got over my initial sense of awe, we began to talk about their dance careers. I’ve always been fascinated with how people rise to the top of their profession. Professional athletes, movie stars and bands, they all have a unique story but there are usually some core similarities. This article outlines the basic things you should do to start your career in dance to become a professional dancer. Now, you’ll need a little bit of luck, good timing and connections as well, but you could get all of that while getting a Big Mac at your local McDonalds. Natural talent is a good base, but it won’t take you to the top. You need to nurture that talent, develop it and present it to the right people. This article shows you the basics. Some are more obvious than others. Most of you just need some reassurance that you’re taking the right steps to reach your goal, while others have no idea where to start. I believe that not all people in the “know” have the level of talent they need, and not all people with talent are in the “know”. I want to change that, so let’s start!

1. People do not become professionals in anything by reading a few articles or practicing a few hours a week. They become students of their profession. Students go to school. This goes for professional dancers as well. Now, there are a select few that push themselves on their own and have developed a wonderful ability, but that is still not enough. Their talent is rough and unrefined. Regardless of how many years you’ve practiced in your basement, everyone needs some formal training. Nothing can replace a veteran dancer showing you right from wrong, critiquing you and encouraging you. Start by going to a dance studio. Obviously, the sooner you do this the better. You’ll rack up experience and the younger you are the more receptive you are to learning. A good rule of thumb is the bigger the dance studio the better the dance professionals. However, a good teacher has experience, but also a connection with their pupil. This relationship can be forged at smaller, local dance studios as well. Remember, this is just the beginning. There are many professionals that reminisce about a grade school teacher that influenced them the most. Of course, it was probably some Julliard professor that trained them the most, but the person who taught them passion and desire is usually someone they met earlier in their dance career.

2. Dance camps and other supplemental dance institutions are a great way to increase your exposure to various aspects of the dance industry. You will network, learn techniques and be exposed to different teachers and performances. Going outside your comfort zone is a great way to build independence, character and a sense of responsibility as a dancer.

3. When you graduate high school, you’ll be looking to go on to college. This decision should be well thought out. You’re going to trust them with your education that will play a significant role in life after college. As an aspiring, professional dancer, you will want to attend the most prestigious dance school you can find. Try to find an accredited dance school, but at the very least any dance school is better than none. Make sure you start planning before it’s time to apply, like well before. You should begin your research about dance schools while you’re still in high school. Find out what requirements they are looking for in a dancer. Do whatever you can to better your chances at being accepted.

By the end of your formal training, you should, if you haven’t already, be narrowing down your dance techniques to a few select, specialized styles. You need to seek out the best dance teacher(s) you can find in those styles and train—train—train. Like any profession, it’s all about education, and for a professional dancer, you never stop learning and practicing. Once again, if you are serious and want to advance in your dance career, at this point you need an expert, a real professional dance teacher.

4. The next tip is something that I’ve written about before. You need good head and body shots, and for that you need a good photographer. Refer to my article, “4 Tips for Great Actor Headshots”, on Talent Trove for more information about what you need for a good portfolio. Yes, it’s about actor headshots, but there are some valid and transferable tips for dancers as well. The important thing to remember for your body shots as a dancer is that you should take pictures of yourself in various dancewears. Don’t wear flashy jewelry, use lighting or shadows to create illusions, or distract the observer with a complex or interesting background. You should be the focus and the subject of interest, nothing else. Good photographs can really help you further you dance career by grabbing the attention of those who should be watching you.

5. At this point, you should already have been to minor dance auditions and castings, just to get your feet wet and some sort of experience, however, now you are ready for some serious work…and it is work. Don’t ever forget that this is your job, your profession. This new level of dance might come as a shock or seem like foreign territory, but you must believe that you are good enough to be here. You are good enough to be here. This is a higher standard. It will be different. It will be difficult, but that is what makes it so much greater when you succeed. You’ve come this far. This is what you’ve been training for, and others have found potential in you, enough to accept and train you. You belong here. The more of these auditions and casting calls you attend, the more comfortable you will become.

6. Those networking and people skills you picked up during your days at dance camp and college will now come into play. You’re in the deep end of the pool now, playing with the big kids. Time to mingle and make new friends. You have to start talking to those professional dancers you see walking the studio halls during your dance auditions. Talk to other dancers who are auditioning. Talk to the judges, casting directors, agents, anyone that will talk to you. Ask them questions, pick their brain, and learn from their stories. Even if they don’t answer your questions, their behavior, demeanor, and way of conversing with you will teach you something. The best thing you can do is become friends with someone successful.

7. You should be fairly comfortable with auditioning by now, and ready to start searching for a dance agent or a dance agency. You will most likely have to perform a dance routine for them in order to be accepted, however, once you’re in you will be given opportunities that you otherwise wouldn’t know existed. These dance agents and dance agencies get the scoop on dance auditions and casting calls so try your best to get represented by one. Once you are in, your dance career will be given wings. However, this is no time to take it easy and coast on through. Now is the time to step it up.

8. Back to what I mentioned before, Ӆyou never stop learning and practicing.” Well, it’s time to train—train—train. Practice makes perfect, I know you’ve heard that before. This intense training period isn’t about learning new styles as it might have been about before. This dance training will focus on honing your existing skills and techniques down to a sharp, crisp point. You need to be awesome in what you do, not mediocre in a broad range of areas. A professional dancer needs to be at the top of their specific field, not hovering in the middle across the board. You’ll have plenty of time later to expand your horizons, but for now you need a job so you can gain valuable experience…and money. Also, stop and take a breath. Look around, you’re becoming a dancer, and your dance career is beginning to take shape. Enjoy it!

9. When you think you’re ready, and don’t wait to long at this point, start researching some choreographers you would like to work with or train with as a pupil. Most dance choreographers will offer dance classes at their own dance studios. You have to wait this long before you attempt to train with a professional dance choreographer, because they are just that, professionals. Dance choreographers will only work with the best dancers so you have to be at a certain point of your dance career for them to take interest in you. There are many benefits to working with a dance choreographer. You become familiar with the way this aspect of the dance industry works. They will begin to recognize you and perhaps throw some work your way. You will also be updated and trained in the most current dance techniques and trends. The fewer things that surprise you during a dance audition the better.

10. At the end of all this there is one important thing to remember, that usually separates those that make it and those that do not. If this is truly what you want, and you’ve dreamt about it all your life, never give up trying. Every successful person in the world has one thing in common. They were relentless in their pursuit of happiness. If you want to make the most out of your dance career, it will take a lot of hard work so don’t get discouraged. You’ll get rejected. Everyone does. Being a dancer is not easy for anyone, but people do it. Why not you?

These tips are not set in stone or by any means in exact order. Everyone is different and some people might jump ahead or start one step later in their career. The important thing is that you have a clear plan with goals, and you work hard to achieve them.

Online Homeschooling Program Allows Great Exemption For Students

There are several online home schooling programs available on the net, and if you want to start a new home schooling program for yourself, just look at one of the programs on the net, and you will realize that they provide everything you need for the best education. The children love the multimedia that is part of the program.
Such programs are created by visionary curriculum specialists, educators and technologists. They have together developed online home schooling programs, which otherwise families attempt to do alone. Now, online home schooling has become much easier, and parents can boast of having more time with their children. If it is successful at the first stage, the children can subsequently be put through online high school home schooling.
When an online home schooling program is developed, it opens doors for many parents to provide their children with a quality education. The curriculum is often based on multimedia material. There are sometimes around 150 courses offered, right from the traditional reading, writing and arithmetic to the modern home school courses like web design and crime scene investigation. Such courses make use of interactive online activities like puzzles, games and research projects. Otherwise, the main methods of teaching are through video, audio and offline textbooks.
For Students
The biggest advantage of an online home schooling program is the freedom that the students get, because they are able to work through the courses at their own pace. In this way learning disabilities or fast learners co-exist without any problems of grade levels. There is no memorizing at all, as the students retain the information that they learn. There are no tests to be passed; it is all about enriching the minds of the students with wisdom and truth.
For Parents
This pattern of the online home schooling program is loved by parents, because they have total control and overview of what their children learn. The learning environment has no peer pressure, negative influences and several other dangers. Most of these solutions are completely led by parents for today’s home schooler. Many academies have independent resource centers for home schoolers in kindergarten right up to the 12th grade.
Home school curriculum is delivered online and includes a
1000
ll the material that is necessary to learn. Everything runs smoothly and perfectly on modem-speed internet connections as well as high-speed broadband lines. Hence, the online home schooling program shows an enhancement of the skills of the student participating in the program, but also a process of learning for every parent who stands by his child during the course of the program.

Is The Online School System Right For You?

There are many people out there that still don’t understand what a real online school system is like. They are hanging onto older notions that just won’t seem to go away. They just don’t seem to grasp how much online schools have changed. Right now, because of our modern technology, anyone can get a full education online.

The image of an online school is that it is just another kind of homeschooling. People have assumed that only people with physical or financial difficulties would actually bother with. They didn’t think that a full curriculum could be delivered online.

That’s just not the case anymore. Most people who register with an online school do so because they simply can’t fit traditional classes into their busy schedule. This way they can do their schooling anytime and anywhere. Whether you’re a full-time, working professional going for another degree, or a young student that is moved around a lot, an online course might be just what you need.

An online school will give students the opportunity to have continual access to all their necessary materials. No longer will they have to drag a heavy textbook everywhere just to squeak out a few more minutes of study time. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer, and you can study anytime you want.

The old ideas about an online school just don’t apply anymore. Studying independently doesn’t mean you will be in a social vacuum. There are numerous forums and chat groups that students can use to meet their fellow learners, and develop relationships that will stick with them long after the curriculum is over. Who needs class reunions? You never have to lose contact with your school buddies because they can just stay on your “friends list.”

Many biases exist in traditional classrooms that often discourage some students from fully participating. But those biases don’t have to exist in online classes. Due to the anonymity of the Internet, you don’t have to worry about who is the “cute one” and who is the “popular one.” Everything is simply judge of participation and performance.

A student can also use an online school to supplement a traditional education. This could be in the form of extra classes, or just taking tha
1000
t class you needed but couldn’t fit the regular class into your busy schedule. Either of these situations are a great reason to look into online classes.

When you take an online class you’ll also be able to participate in the curriculum when you feel the most alert. Some people aren’t morning people. This means they can take their classes when they are completely awake and only have to stick with it as long as their attention span will take them. That makes an online school a convenient and smart choice for busy students.

I want to graduate from high school a year early.?

Hello, I am currently a freshman who attends an arts school in NY. I am in the art school for acting and it's always been my passion, but I'm also very intellectual and I feel very intellectually stifled right now.

I don't know if it's because I go to an art school with academic classes, but it's so awfully slow. I don't know if other schools in my neighborhood are like this, but my school is so academically easy. I don't mean to sound arrogant or anything, but I feel like I'm constantly ahead, just waiting for everybody to catch up. In math class, I'm just sitting there, doing nothing because I've already taught myself everything. I learn better when I teach it to myself, a quirky trait that the teachers don't understand.

I'm currently taking all honor classes and I know you're probably going to tell me to just enjoy it, that I'm so lucky it's all just an easy ride for me, but I'm not happy here. I have a need for intellectual stimulation, I love knowledge. I'm not planning to be an actor when I grow up, I'm planning to be a doctor or some other interesting vocation. Besides that, I don't have any real friends. I have a place to sit at lunch and people to chitchat with, which I'm thankful for, but I'm just so bored when I talk to them. I want to talk about trains or train autoparts or something that interests me. [I'm secretly autistic, by the way]. I don't get bullied or anything, which I'm also very thankful for, but it's just so… boring. I feel so lifeless. So dead.

Is there any possible way I could graduate from high school a year early? I know I would have to take classes at a community college and take the SAT early and everything, which I'm willing to do. The catch is, my school administration won't help me. They disapprove of all high-schoolers graduating early. There's rumors that the school administration just wants to look good. If I attend their school for 4 years instead of 3, and I become some hot-shot actor, more glory to them.

So what do I do? I almost can't take the thought of going through this monotony. I'm sure I can bear it, but I just don't want to live those years so unhappy. How can I graduate high school a year early? Thanks.

The students who should consider a math tutor usually fall into two categories. There is the student who is working really hard, doing everything the teacher asks, and still genuinely having trouble mastering concepts and getting good grades. Secondly, there is the student who isn’t applying himself, doesn’t do homework, and doesn’t pay attention in class. Students in both of these groups can benefit from working with a tutor, but in very different ways.

Let’s start with taking a look at that first group. The student who is working very hard and not getting desired results quickly becomes frustrated, and understandably so. Using a tutor usually proves to be quite beneficial for this type student. I say usually because the decision to look to a tutor for help is a very individual and personal one. Some students view having a tutor as a status symbol while others shy away from the idea for fear of being labeled slow, stupid, or something similar. So the absolute first step in deciding whether to use a tutor should be a serious conversation with your student. Determine how he or she feels about working with a tutor and go from there. Most students in this category will be receptive to the idea because they are serious about their work, realize they need help, and welcome the relief of easing their frustration. When this is the case, it usually doesn’t take much at all for a good tutor to help smooth out the rough spots. The student who is studying and working hard will be able to point out the exact problem areas to the tutor. In turn, the tutor will be able to address those problems with the student thoroughly and effectively.

Now let’s take a look at the second group of students possibly in need of a tutor; the student who really isn’t applying himself to the course work. This student may be entirely capable of understanding and mastering the concepts and getting good grades without a tutor. The problem lies in the fact that the student hasn’t attempted enough work to know whether or not he is capable. Working with a tutor can benefit this type student in a couple of ways. First, having a regularly scheduled session for one-on-one tutoring forces the student to focus on the course work for at least the time of the tutoring session. Secondly, the student who isn’t applying himself will quickly fall behind, which is a major concern in high school math courses. Math concepts build on one another. Even if a poor student suddenly decides to apply himself, he will have trouble if past concepts haven’t been mastered. Starting to work with a tutor early, when poor performance is first detected, can help prevent the student from falling too far behind.

It should be noted that students sometimes feel that having a tutor automatically equates to instant success. I have sometimes had students in my classes who would not stay on task during class time assignments intended for drill, practice, and understanding. When I would attempt to steer them back on task, I would get replies such as “Oh, my tutor is coming tonight. I’ll get it done them.” Parents should keep an eye out for that kind of attitude and try to guard against it. Working with a tutor should be supplemental to, not instead of, regular class work supervised by the teacher.

Jeremy Jackson, a student at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, enrolled in a Digital Video Production summer course at iD Tech Camps UCLA location. At this weeklong, hands-on technology summer program for ages 7-17 located at universities nationwide, Jeremy developed an understanding for shooting, editing, and creating special effects using Adobe software.

Jeremy’s father, an animator for Disney, inspired his son at a young age with a passion for filmmaking and CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). Since perfecting his skills at camp, Jeremy attends Hollywood movie premieres as the cinematographer for 16 year-old Fred Medill, the host of “Fred TV.” A series with informative interviews of celebrities in motion pictures and television, and star athletes, “Fred TV” has taken Hollywood by storm. Jeremy can be seen at many Hollywood premieres behind the camera as Fred interviews celebrities.

While having used Adobe® software for school projects, Jeremy never used Adobe Photoshop® and Adobe After Effects® to create special effects for a movie until attending iD Tech Camps. Along with classmates, Jeremy created high-end special effects and learned advanced compositing and cinematography. Many of the effects that they created have been used in popular Hollywood movies. While a completely new program for Jeremy, After Effects quickly became a favorite.

“You can do everything with After Effects, from making it rain to making a guy freeze in mid-air,” said Jeremy while describing his camp movie The Majority Report- A movie about the powers of good vs. evil. Jeremy and his classmates used an effect which caused three fleeing men to freeze in mid-air, before resuming running.

During camp, Jeremy’s movie premiered at Family Showcase. “Everyone watching the movie was very impressed by the quality of the special effects my son’s group was able to create in just one week,” said Jeremy’s mom, Meredith Jackson. “The movie was a hit and I think we’ve watched it 100 times since then!”

Students like Jeremy use digitized footage in Adobe After Effects to add special effects like chroma key. They composited multiple layers of video to give the footage different effects. The software is so user-friendly that even a teenage camper like Jeremy can easily add impressive lasers and fire using plug-ins.

“It’s exciting teaching campers how to composite layers within their digital movie,” said Jeremy’s instructor, Kevin Painchaud, owner of a Hollywood-based production company whose movie “NTV-1” had a sellout crowd for their screening at the Hollywood Film Festival. “Jeremy’s passion for filmmaking poured out of him each day, inside and outside of the classroom. He just really wanted to learn everything there was to know about filmmaking and caught on very quickly,” said Mr. Painchaud. It looks like the next Steven Spielberg may have just gotten his start!

As for now, Jeremy continues to accompany Fred to Hollywood premieres, getting experience shooting the stars. Someday he hopes to be a Cinematographer for motion pictures, just like his mentor from camp, Mr. Painchaud.
